At first glance, organic blood oranges may look like your standard navel. Underneath the orange rind, which is sometimes kissed with a red blush, the flesh ranges in color from striped-red-orange to a beautiful maroon. (Fun Fact: Their color is due to a naturally occurring pigment called anthocyanin. This pigment is also found in blueberries and cherries.)

But the color of the flesh isn’t the only difference between blood oranges and regular oranges. They tend to be smaller in size, have very few seeds (if any!) and have a floral fragrance and a sweet-tart taste with berrylike overtones. This gorgeous citrus is incredible when segmented into salads, baked into a decadent cake, or juiced into brightly-colored cocktails.
